Document Manager Job Advertisement: Kenya Arid and Semiarid Lands Research Programme (KASAL)

Background

Funded by the European Union (EDF) the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI) is implementing KASAL, a 3-year research programme for the arid and semiarid districts of Kenya.

The programme involves three KARI centres and is managed by the KASAL Programme Coordination Unit (PCU) based at KARI HQ in Nairobi.

The KASAL Programme Coordination Unit is headed by the National Programme Coordinator KARI. KASAL Programme Coordination Unit support staff and management inputs are provided by KARI’s KASAL partner consortium (NR-International and Intermedia-NCG).

The Document Manager will be part of the support staff under the KASAL partner consortium

To make KARI expertise and technologies available to all development actors in the regional ASAL the KASAL programme is establishing a KARI digital ‘Crop and Livestock Information Communication Knowledge’ System (CLICK).

The KASAL Document Manager will trace, compile and systematically organise research and technology publications relevant to the contents of this website.

Position: Document Manager

Reporting to: KASAL National Coordinator and KASAL TA

Duration: 1 year (option to renew contract until 31st May 2010)

Location: Nairobi, with travel to various KARI centres

Scope of work

Activities:
  • To trace and collect relevant documents from within KARI and from outside sources (guidance from senior KARI scientists)
  • Develop and maintain document collection
  • Perform original cataloguing and classification of print documents and other information resources (audio-visual and electronic)
  • Develop and maintain indexing system
  • Provide inputs towards building up and structuring the CLICK website
  • Conduct online searches
  • Supervise and organise the work of the web communication assistant
Essential requirements (Qualifications)
  • Library policies, procedures, methods, ethics and professional standards
  • Library programming standards
  • Research and information gathering systems and methods
  • Computerized information database systems
  • Library systems for cataloguing, acquisitions and searching, on-line bibliographic utilities
