The Africa-based, globally networked International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) helps reduce poverty, hunger and environmental degradation by enhancing animal agriculture in developing countries.
ILRI positions its work at the dynamic interface of poverty alleviation and sustainable livestock livelihoods.
Our staff works in partnerships and alliances with hundreds of organisations in developed and developing countries, including some of the finest universities and research institutions in the world.
ILRI also hosts Biosciences eastern and central Africa (BecA), a new centre of excellence in modern plant, microbe and livestock research in Africa.
It consists of a Hub based on the ILRI campus in Nairobi, Kenya, as well as a network of regional nodes and other affiliated laboratories and organizations throughout the region.
BecA facilitates, hosts and conducts crop, microbe and livestock research, translating new developments in science to address previously intractable problems constraining Africa’s development.
Capacity building pervades all of BecA’s activities as an overarching objective. BecA’s scope covers agriculture, food security, their intersections with human health and nutrition, and the sustainable use of Africa’s natural resources.

The Position:
The BecA-ILRI Hub seeks to recruit a research technician to join the SegoliP Unit to facilitate DNA sequencing, genotyping and DNA synthesis services to institutions in the region.
The technician will report to the Technology Manager of the BecA-ILRI Hub.

Responsibilities:
- Provide expert and specialised technical assistance in sequencing, genotyping and proteomics including participation in experimental design, execution and reporting.
- Introducing, adapting, testing and implementing novel methodologies not previously used in the Unit in an efficient and cost effective manner.
- Provide technical leadership and trouble-shooting in complex manipulations in genotyping and sequencing.
- Ensure that the methodologies and standard operating procedures used in the unit conform to national and international health & safety standards.
- Maintain laboratory chemical usage records and good laboratory practices.
- Sourcing and procurement of laboratory supplies and equipment.
- Planning and administration of Unit resources and budgets to ensure that services are rendered on a cost recovery basis.
- Providing prospective clients and visiting scientists with cost estimates and detailed information on how costs are derived for services provided by the Unit.
- Liaison for the Unit to establish, enlighten, and inform both internal and external users and clients of the unit.
- Maintain excellent working and operational relationships with internal and external clients by issuing reports.
Essential Skills and Qualifications will include:
- A degree in Biosciences or equivalent.
- Two years experience in the relevant field with demonstrated experience in modern biosciences experimental techniques including automated DNA sequencing and genetic marker technologies from DNA isolation to data scoring using GeneMapper Software, and preliminary data analyses using appropriate statistical software.
- Basic understanding of bioinformatics.
- Hands-on experience with extraction and manipulation of nucleic acids from animals, plants or microbes.
- Experience in proteomics and the use of laboratory management information systems (LIMS) is also desirable.
- Advanced trouble-shooting skills.
- Good communication, organizational and documentation skills.

This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position and is for a 2-year contract renewable subject to availability of funds and individual performance.
Salary and benefits will be in line with those provided within ILRI’s NRS scheme.

The positions:
ILRI seeks to recruit two outstanding Post-Doctoral Scientist to act as the primary drivers of the science of ILRI’s component of an important new project entitled “An Integrated Response System For Emerging Infectious Diseases in East Africa”.
This is a challenging and highly collaborative project which aims to bring current molecular and epidemiological approaches to the detection of pathogens –both known and unknown in field samples.
ILRI’s primary role is in establishing and exploiting a 2nd generation sequencing platform together with data analysis and sample biobanking.
Collaborators from Kenya, UK, USA and elsewhere represent world leaders in these areas.
This is an opportunity for dynamic and motivated post-docs who are capable of working in dispersed and complex teams, to make important contributions to the understanding of disease in Africa – particularly epidemic viral disease.

Post Doctoral Scientist: Pathogen Discovery

Responsibilities
- Designing and testing highly multiplexed assays for a range of sequences
- Establishing sampling and pooling protocols
- Overseeing the Project’s use of a Roche 454 (Titanium) sequencer
- Sequence data QA/QC
- At least 3 years post doctoral experience in molecular analysis of complex biological material
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to perform in a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural research environment.
- Fluency in spoken and written English.
- Hands on experience of highly multiplexed PCR, e.g. for diagnostics and of working with complex, mixed and “dirty” biological samples.
- Evidence of innovation and initiative
- Experience of “wet” plus informatics aspects of a high throughput sequencing environment, RNA virus genome analysis and phylogenetic/population analysis in prokaryotes or eukaryotes would be an important advantage.
These appointments are for two years with possibility to renew subject to performance and fund availability.

A. Post Doctoral Scientist: Virus Population Biology

- Overseeing the handling, storage and retrieval of sequence data and implementation/development of associated applications
- Implementation/development of sequence analysis applications
- Sequence data QA/QC
- A PhD degree obtained no more than 5 years ago in molecular genetics
- Good population genetics, quantitative genetics and bioinformatics skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to perform in a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural research environment.
- Fluency in spoken and written English.
- Hands on experience of sequence data QC, best practice data management methods, sequence data analysis and management using proprietary and ‘homemade’ software, knowledge of database principles, SQL and scripting language such as Perl, rapid construction of custom analysis pipelines for specific tasks.
- Evidence of innovation and initiative
- Experience of DNA-based pathogen discovery through DNA/RNA analysis would be an important advantage.
