Job Purpose:

To execute research in the lab which focuses on investigating the functional importance of key parasite molecules expressed on the surface of Plasmodium falciparum-infected red cells in the parasite-host interaction and in naturally acquired immunity to malaria.

Current areas of research include:

1) Characterization of sequence diversity and expression patterns of rif and stevor variant gene families in P. falciparum isolates sampled from natural malaria infections;

2) Measurement of naturally acquired antibody responses to the respective encoded antigens expressed in malaria infections, and

3) Sub-Cellular localization and trafficking studies.

  • DNA/RNA extraction and manipulation.
  • Monitoring gene expression using Northern blotting, reverse transcriptase-PCR &/or real-time PCR.
  • Preparation of genomic and cDNA libraries of PCR-amplified sequences from parasite samples.
  • Recombinant protein expression.
  • Immunoprofiling using flow cytometry, ELISA and western blotting.
