IOM Job Consultant – Professional Editor & Report Layout

Functional Title: Consultant – Professional Editor & Report Layout
Grade: Consultant
Post of Duty: Nairobi, Kenya
Duration: On project needs basis, beginning 20 July 2009

1. Background Information
As the lead technical agency on the health and HIV aspects of human migration and
mobility, IOM is working with Member States and Regional Economic Communities to
promote evidence-informed policies and holistic integrated preventive and curative health
programmes which are beneficial, accessible, and equitable for vulnerable migrants and
mobile populations.

This work is undertaken through the IOM Africa Health Strategy comprising the strategic
areas of: 1) Service Delivery & Capacity Building; 2) Advocacy & Policy Development; 3)
Research & Information Sharing; and 4) National / Regional Coordination and Technical
Cooperation.

In exercising its mandate in East Africa, IOM has completed a number of technical and
advocacy documents covering HIV/AIDS and other aspects of public health. These
documents have been vetted by technical experts and require professional editing. In
addition, a programme image or brand is required in design and layout of publications, so
that programme outputs are readily iden

The programme is thus seeking to establish a pool of five professional English language
editors and five design consultants that can be contracted as needed.

2. Job Description
Under the direct supervision of the Health Programme Officer, and in collaboration with
members of IOM’s Migration Health Team, the incumbent(s) will be responsible for
professional editing of IOM strategic publications and/or designing the layout of such
edited documents.

Professional editing duties involve reviewing and making corrections as follows:
Typographical and spelling errors;
Grammatical errors and overly academic jargon;
Errors in country and/or geographical names;
Repetitions and inconsistencies in text;
Improving the natural flow of the text;

Terms of Reference
Completeness, correctness, and consistency of bibliographic information.
Editing will strictly follow basic formatting guidelines and English house style
guidelines provided by IOM, including the IOM House Style Guide, WHO Style Guide,
and UNAIDS Terminology Guide.
Report design and layout duties will entail:
Drafting of sample report covers and layout;
Final design of and layout of the individual pages of the report.

3. Deliverables
Professional editing deliverables will entail:
Satisfactorily edited MS Word document in track changes;
Same document with track changes accepted by IOM.
Report design and layout duties will entail:
Satisfactorily-designed and laid out report(s) delivered in electronic form to IOM,
and ready for printing.

4. Required Skills and Competencies
Professional editing:
English mother tongue or fluent in written English;
University or post-graduate degree in social science, public health, or related
discipline;
Professional exposure to public health or HIV/AIDS desirable;
Demonstrated capacity to deliver professionally-edited and clearly-written Englishlanguage
manuscripts;
Demonstrated capacity to produce professional endnotes, footnotes, and
bibliographies;
Demonstrated capacity to deliver outputs on time;
Exceptional attention to detail.

Report design and layout:
Previous experience in professional document design and layout;
Capacity to deliver electronic outputs to IOM in print-ready format;
Experience in liaison with publishers for report production;
Ability to produce reports utilizing software packages commonly used by
publishers, including; Corel Draw, InDesign, Quark Professional, and Publisher;
Demonstrated capacity to deliver outputs on time;
Exceptional attention to detail.
