Kenya National Commission on Human Rights Jobs Careers

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights is an independent National Human Rights Institution established through the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights Act, 2002. It is the State’s lead agency in the promotion and protection of human rights. The Commission fulfils its human rights mandate through a number of programmes including Policy, Research and Legislation, Human Rights Education, Complaints and Investigations, and exercise of quasi-judicial powers. The Commissions’ main office is in Nairobi and currently has two regional offices in Wajir and Kitale. Officers may serve in the Head Office or in any of the regional
offices. The Commission is inviting applications for the following position.

1. PRINCIPAL HUMAN RIGHTS OFFICER - CAMPAIGNS AND ADVOCACY
Reports to: Commission Secretary
Purpose: Providing guidance and leadership to the Campaigns Programme, developing
and implementing Campaigns and Advocacy strategies on key human rights
concerns/Issues
Location: Head Office, with occasional field travel
Duration: Five years contract

Key duties and responsibilities
• Research and Advocacy on transitional justice.
• Research and advocacy on anti corruption.
• Leadership on advocacy and campaign issues at the KNCHR.
• Liaison with Government departments and civil society organizations in matters to do with advocacy on protection and promotion of human rights
• Supervision of the Campaigns and Advocacy programme at the staff level
• Quality assurance of the programme outputs/outcomes
• In Liaison with Finance, manage budget for the programme
• Report writing
• Ensuring adequate flow of information within the programme
• Convening Departmental meetings and representing the department in routine/regular technical meetings both internal and external.
• Coordinating, planning and day-to-day implementation of the programme in accordance with the approved work plan / budgets.

Qualifications, Experience, Skills, and Attributes
• A Masters Degree in Law or social sciences.
• Eight years experience in Campaigns and Advocacy work in the human rights/social justice sector with at least three years at a supervisory level
• Good understanding of human rights issues
• Excellent report writing and presentation skills
• Excellent computer skills in various computer packages (Ms. Word, Excel & PowerPoint)
• Good communication, interpersonal and people management skills
• Good organizational and analytical skills
• Ability to work under pressure and to meet deadlines
• Honesty, transparency and a high level of integrity.

2. HUMAN RESOURCE AND ADMINISTRATION OFFICER I
Reports to: Human Resource and Administration Manager
Purpose: To provide human resource and administrative support to the Commission
Location: Head Office, with occasional field travel
Duration: Five years contract

Key duties and responsibilities
• Provide Human Resource and Administrative support to the Commission Secretary and Commissioners.
• Coordination of support services including office cleanliness, security, communication (telephones) and the reception
• Managing the Commission Secretary’s diary and keeping all Commission wide records, policies and standard documents.
• Facilitating the various appointments for the Commissioners
• Coordinating and facilitating meetings for the Commission Secretary and any otherprogramme.
• Coordination of various staff welfare activities
• Facilitate the maintenance of all commission offices, assets and ensure a proper record of the same is kept.
• Assist in organizing Commissioners statutory meetings and any other meetings as required
• Assist in the implementation and management of the various staff benefits- medical, leave, insurances and pension
• Assist in the facilitation and coordination of all recruitments and induction within the secretariat
• Assist in the management and implementation of the various administration budgets and procurements

Skills, Experience & Academic Qualifications
• A Bachelors Degree in Social Sciences or in a relevant field and a professional qualification in Human Resource Management.
• Three years experience in human resource and administration department in a busy organisation with at least one year at a supervisory level
• Proven good people and office management skills
• Very good writing, communication and presentation skills
• Excellent computer skills in various computer packages
• Good organizational and analytical skills
• Honest, transparent and a high level of integrity.
• Ability to work under pressure and to meet deadlines
